🗑️ Waste Transfer Station Viewing Room (Fremont)

Hidden gem alert! Want to see where Seattle’s trash actually goes?

Head to the J.P. Patches Viewing Room on the third floor of the South Transfer Station. It is a self guided peek behind the curtain of a system that processes more than 320,000 tons of garbage, recycling, and yard waste every year.

The room overlooks the “tipping floor,” which is exactly as dramatic as it sounds. You can watch the daily operation in real time while interactive displays and short videos break down how Seattle handles solid waste, recycling, and waste reduction.

Know before you go:

  • Open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • ADA accessible

  • Standing room only. No seating available

  • Self guided experience. No staff on site and no guided tours
